Hawaii... First Day

note:
This post is the first in a series about our trip. I will add more when I get to it.

Candi and I left on Thursday, November 25, Thanksgiving for ten days in sunny Hawaii. Our friend Loretta was going for Thanksgiving dinner in Staten Island. She was gracious enough to drive us to Newark Airport. Made it in in record time. Only thing we forgot was our crash helmets. Lead foot. We had our traditional Thanksgiving dinner at the airport diner. It consisted of a rather expensive turkey sandwich. $30 later, we made our way to the gate.

Our Continental flight left on time and was about 3/4 full. We settled into our seats for the 11 hour non stop flight from Newark to Honolulu. Brought the Ipod, lots of magazines, a book on Hawaiian history and our new friend, "Little Nellie", the trusty ASUS NetBook.

Only problem was a cabin with about 20 whiny babies. One especially didn't stop crying for the 11 hours we were in the air. Hopefully, this wasn't an omen of things to come. Don't understand why someone would take a baby on a Hawaiian vacation. We landed in HNL without any problems. Since we didn’t check any baggage, we didn't have to wait. Made our way to pick up our car and drove downtown to Waikiki.

The Waikiki EDITION a new brand for Marriott. It is a boutique hotel more suited for Soho in Manhattan. rather then Waikiki. ,http://www.editionhotels.com/en-us/#/en-us/hotels/waikiki

All the furnishings are either black or white (or shades thereof). new age with music more suited for twenty somethings, not aging baby-boomers. Very hip. Missing were the tiki torches, Hawaiian music and floral prints found in a more traditional Hawaiian resort. The room had a little niche with a three sarongs (for sale at about $30 each), a couple of starfish and a ukulele (also for sale)
The cash bar in the room was more like a store. You could buy anything from a split of Don Perignon for $100 to an intimacy kit for ten bucks that had a couple of condoms, a small tube of lubricant and some handy wipes. In the old days, an intimacy kit would consist of a can of Right Guard and a wash cloth. Now, we get excited if we get a shower cap or a sewing kit. A shoe shine mitt is a big plus.

Service was really over the top and everyone was very friendly. It would take twenty minutes to walk out of the hotel. It seemed everyone that worked there had to engage you in a conversation. After a short while, you just wanted to be left alone.

Had a nice room on the 15th floor looking at both the ocean and the city. Unfortunately, it is on the main road to Waikiki Beach and you hear the din of the traffic whenever you sit on the lanai. We were only here for two days to decompress from the long flight so it was tolerable.
more to come...
